How to Improve Communication While Wearing a Face Mask

Wearing a face mask has become a part of our routine this past year. Whenever you leave the house or interact with other people, you have adjusted to wearing a mask. For many people, this does not affect their ability to communicate with others. However, for those who have hearing loss, this has proven to be a barrier to effective communication.

For people with hearing loss, face masks make it difficult to understand speech. Often times, the face mask can muffle sounds, making it even harder for someone with hearing loss to understand the conversation. Many individuals with hearing loss also rely on lip reading. When the speaker is wearing a face mask the lower half of their face is completely covered, making it impossible to lip read.

Although communicating while wearing a face mask can be difficult, it doesn't have to be impossible. Below are tips to help you communicate your best while still being safe and wearing a face mask.

Tips for Better Communication

If you have hearing loss, it can feel embarrassing to mishear a word or not fully understand the conversation. Following these tips can help you better understand what the speaker is saying and feel more confident in your interactions.

  1. Wear your hearing aids: Hearing aids can help you hear significantly better by providing you with clarity. The best tip for you to be successful is to wear your hearing aids.
  2. Reduce background noise: Even without the added barrier of a face mask, background noise can be distracting and make communication more difficult. When having a conversation, be sure to choose a quiet location so you can give the speaker your full attention.
  3. Keep eye contact with the speaker: Although you may not be able to rely on lip reading, you can still tell a lot from someone's facial expressions. Maintaining eye contact can help you understand the speaker's body language and what they are trying to stay.

Following these tips can help you communicate better and combat the barriers that are created when speaking to someone with a face mask.

Be Proactive

If you have hearing loss, be sure to communicate your needs or concerns with your loved ones. Support and patience are some of the best ways your family or friends can help you. Some other ways they can make communication more effective are to:

  1. Speak at a lower, louder volume.
  2. Rephrase their sentences.
  3. Wear a clear face mask so you can see their mouth.

Together, you and your loved ones can effectively communicate while still wearing your face masks. One of the most important tips for better communication is to wear your hearing aids.
